The Pannonian Lakes of Tuzla: Europe's only urban saltwater beach

Pannonica, a unique phenomenon in Europe

Tuzla is the only city in Europe with salt lakes right in its city centre. The Pannonica complex, completed in 2012, was designed to address subsidence problems caused by centuries of salt mining. Today, the site attracts over 534,000 visitors each summer, confirming its place among the most popular summer destinations in the Balkans.

Three lakes, cascades and thermal pools

The complex comprises three lakes of varying sizes and depths, fed by mineral-rich brine drawn from underground wells. Above the main lake, a series of saltwater cascades and shallow pools offer a natural massage experience. Visitors appreciate the respiratory benefits of the saline air and the gentle warmth of the thermal waters, reminiscent of Dead Sea resorts.

An archaeological park by the water

In the south-eastern corner of the complex, nine reconstructed huts evoke lakeside dwellings thousands of years old. This archaeological park lets you dive into the region's history while enjoying the green surroundings. Playgrounds, green spaces and cafes complete the offering for a family day out.

Practical tips for your visit

The bathing season runs from June to September. Tuzla International Airport, served by several low-cost airlines, is just 10 kilometres from the city centre. Bring a towel and sunscreen: the sandy beaches around the lakes will make you forget you are 200 kilometres from the sea.
